HERE Formats for Presentations An Oral Presentation is a verbal report on a project, typically with visual aids, followed by a question-and-answer period. Both empirical presentations and theoretical/literature reviews are acceptable. The project may be the work of a single author or a group of colleagues. Presenters are encouraged to allocate 12 minutes for the report with an additional 3 minutes for questions. Presenters will be asked to stop any presentation that runs beyond the allotted time. A Poster Presentation is a written report, often with graphics, on a project for viewing by convention attendees. Both empirical presentations and theoretical/literature reviews are acceptable. Like an oral presentation, a poster may represent the work of a single author or a group of colleagues. Posters will be displayed during designated in 70-minute sessions; during that time presenters should stay near their posters to answer questions and discuss their projects. Posters should be legible at a distance of 3-4 feet and handouts are encouraged. Poster boards are free standing and the dimensions are 8x4 feet. Please bring your own push pins. A Symposium is a format in which typically 2 to 4 individuals deliver oral presentations, or present a panel discussion on a given topic or line of research. The presenters may offer varied perspectives or express diverse opinions about the topic. A symposium will be scheduled for 30 minutes. If you need longer than 30 minutes, please note this in the abstract, or contact Dr. Stuber-McEwen. Categories of Presentations: Empirical Presentations are reports on original research projects. These reports incorporate information on data collection and analyses that the authors have conducted. Empirical research encompasses a variety of data collection methods, techniques, and designs (e.g., experimental, correlational, archival, case studies, etc.) and analyses (e.g., qualitative, quantitative). Theoretical/literature Reviews, also referred to as non-empirical presentations, are reports on others’ research, current trends, biographies, methods, theories, and other selected topics – that is, reports not generated from the author’s original research. Symposia or Panel Discussions may fit into either category. If your group needs longer than 30 minutes, please note this in the abstract, or contact Dr. Stuber-McEwen. A note to paper presenters: All rooms for paper presentations will have PC, front access USB port, and CD/DVD drive. NO Mac computers are available. We strongly recommend Power Point files be saved on a USB memory stick and e-mailed to yourself as a backup. Although there are CD drives on these computers, problems can arise trying to open files written to CDs. Tech support will be available for assistance should problems arise. A note to poster presenters: You will be assigned a poster board to mount your poster. Poster Boards are 8x4 feet and are free standing. Please bring your own push pins!
